Profile
Mariachi Mujer 2000 will pave the road for a unique expression of mariachi music in the
new millennium. Unlike other high profile all-female mariachi groups, Mariachi Mujer 2000
is lead and musically directed by women. This group is motivated by the desire to
demonstrate that women in mariachi music can successfully arrange and perform some of the
most challenging mariachi selections.
Perhaps most notable about Mariachi Mujer 2000
is that its membership is composed of well recognized and experienced mariachi musicians.
Of the eleven members in the group, six are former members of the first all-female
mariachi show group in the United States, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles. The group's
director, Marisa Orduño, is an experienced and accomplished musician whose love for music
has given her the strength and ability to establish a new and promising group. Her musical
diversity is an asset, lending infinite potential to the group. Additionally, the musical
director, Laura Sobrino, is admired by many of her colleagues. Her experience has earned
her international recognition as one of mariachi history's female pioneers.
Prior to their collaboration with Mariachi Mujer 2000, members of this group have shared
the stage with some of the greatest mariachi artists in the world such as Mariachi Vargas
de Tecalitlan, Mariachi Cobre and Mariachi America. They have also performed with some of
Mexico's most celebrated performers like Lucha Villa, Aida Cuevas, Miguel Aceves Mejia,
Alejandro Fernandez and the late Lola Beltran.
The women in this group are highly skilled vocalists and instrumentalists. From symphony
concertmasters to a champion fiddler, the versatility of this group is extraordinary. Most
of the women play instruments other than those primarily played in mariachi music. They
also perform other musical genres including classical, jazz, pop, country, salsa and
huasteco. In addition to being accomplished musicians, the members of Mariachi Mujer 2000
are well-rounded and excel in other areas of their lives. The group's educational
background ranges from high school students to currently enrolled university students,
some with bachelors degrees and even a Ph.D. graduate.
The women in Mariachi Mujer 2000 hope to become role-models for future female
mariachi musicians both on stage as well as in everyday life. With the unveiling of the
new millennium, women are more often admired and respected for their professional
advancement and their given responsibilities. Therefore, it is inevitable that Mariachi
Mujer 2000 will break the rules of tradition and set new standards for years to come.
